A Sonoma County woman is suing Costco for more than $14 million after she says she was badly hurt in a Santa Rosa store.
What Happened?
Sadie Novotny was shopping at the Costco on Santa Rosa Avenue when a cabinet on display suddenly fell on her. She says the cabinet was sitting on a weak wooden pallet and was not stable. When it tipped over, it pinned her underneath and caused serious injuries, including a traumatic brain injury.
Why Is She Suing Costco?
Sadie claims that Costco was careless in how they set up the display. She says the store did not make sure the cabinet was safe, did not warn shoppers about the danger, and did not train workers to spot these risks. Because of this, she believes Costco is responsible for her injuries.
How Much Is She Asking For?
Sadie’s lawsuit asks for:
- $5 million for pain and suffering
- $5 million for emotional distress
- $100,000 for medical bills and lost wages so far
- $4 million for future medical costs and lost income
What Happens Next?
The lawsuit was first filed in Alameda County but has now moved to a federal court. Both sides are set to meet in September to discuss the case.
- Why Does This Matter?
This case is getting a lot of attention in the Bay Area. Many people are watching to see what happens, as it could affect how stores keep their customers safe.
Costco has not made any public comments yet about the lawsuit.
